#eatkit archive August – Yogurt good for your bones, good for your kitchen

August 15, 2012 at 9-10pm AEST

To support Australian Healthy Bones Week which runs from 19 to 25 Aug our #EatKit focussed on a food we love, yogurt.

We encourage an adequate intake of dairy foods to help maintain bone strength and prevent osteoporosis in later life.   Most people slip in a serve of yogurt at breakfast or as a snack, but cooking with yogurt is not something that’s second nature.  On the night we explored all things yogurt, including kitchen nutrition and culinary creativity.

We are grateful to Chobani Australia @Chobaniau for supporting this month’s chat.  We welcomed Chobani dietitian in Australia Emily Houlahan APD as our featured guest, along with Somer Sivrioglu, Owner and chef, Efendy Restaurant, Balmain, Sydney. Chobani is a new new high-protein Greek yogurt.  There was also a fab prize to win – a pass to the International Congress of Dietetics.  Further details: ICD Free Pass Competition Terms and Conditions.

Here are the five questions:

Q1.  Yogurt is often thought of as a quick snack or breakfast food.  Let’s poll your top 3 usages?

Q2. Does yogurt have advantages over other dairy foods? e.g. As an appealing food for teens and young women whose calcium needs are high?

Q3. What do you look for when choosing or advising on yogurt?

Q4. What about yogurt in cooking? Let’s share tips & healthy recipes.

Q5. Maintaining strong bones involves more than just calcium counts. How should we broaden our advice on bone health?
